Summary

The Accountant will be responsible for all accounting operations with Internews, Regional Office in Nairobi, Kenya. S/he will work closely with the Internews Regional Program Accountant/Africa and other members of the Internews Regional Office in Kenya and in HQ. This is position requires sound technical knowledge and skills in accounting and administration.

Description

Description of main duties and responsibilities: Accounting

  • Responsible for recording transactions in Unit 4 BW in a timely manner.
  • Ensure that proper supporting documentation is provided for all transactions and ensure that Internews accounting policies and procedures are properly implemented.
  • Work closely with the Project Directors, as well as with relevant colleagues at the Internews Africa Regional Office and Headquarters to ensure that projects are compliant at all levels of funders’ financial rules and regulations.
  • Review all payment requests and verify and validate all documents submitted for payment.
  • Provide training in accounting as necessary to any staff under his or her supervision.
  • Ensure vouchers are endorsed with the appropriate approval signatures and that all supporting documentation is provided. Responsible for providing corrections resulting from review of vouchers.
  • Oversee the maintenance of finance and accounting files.
  • Maintain the assets inventory.
  • Oversees banking transactions, including deposits and bank statement collection, and the adherence to proper approval procedures, as well as the maintenance of updated banking files including a list of signatories and agents of the bank accounts.
  • Prepare the monthly payroll for the Regional Office.
  • Prepare end month financial and accounting reports using Unit 4 BW. Responsible for cash and bank reconciliations, as well as overseeing and monitoring business advances to the project staff, vendors’ vetting, and accruals.

Any other duties as assigned by the Business Manager.

Education
Bachelor's Degree In Accounting Bachelor's Degree In Finance

  • Minimum Bachelors’ Degree in Accounting and Finance, Business Administration, or related field; Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Professional qualification in Accounting (e.g. CPA, ACCA) will be an added advantage.
  • Knowledge of related software systems, including Microsoft Office.

More Details on Experience

  • Minimum of five years’ professional experience, ideally with an international NGO in Kenya.
  • Experience working with USAID and other donors. Demonstrated understanding of USAID donor reporting requirements and rules and regulations highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in and excellent understanding of IT-based ERP systems and Unit 4 BW highly preferred.
  • Capability in evaluation of Legislation, Accounting regulations and Tax matters, including employment-related subjects.

  • Kenyan nationality required.
