Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) Kenya

Summary

To contribute to VSO’s Medical Team providing approachable and confidential support to VSO people. Provide professional nursing experience to support the preparation of volunteers and employees to work for VSO and to case manage health incidents of volunteers, employees and their dependents across VSO locations.

Description

Task Responsibilities

  • Practice in accordance with recognised ethical practice and
    licensing standards.

Medical Clearance to work

  • Make decisions about whether people are safe to travel or begin specific assignments, following Medical Team guidelines, medically clear employees and volunteers for assignments, referring complex cases to the Medical Adviser and recording the appropriate detail on medical records.

Individual Case Management

  • Provide support to VSO people and their dependents who become unwell and advise on health issues and procedures internationally, basing advice on broad
    direction from Medical Adviser (doctors accessible 2 days per week). This will include support for mental health issues.
  • Facilitate pre-authorisation and payment arrangements as required by VSO global medical insurer
  • In the case of a medical emergency take lead role with the
    repatriation company, interfacing with project teams and
    others as required.
  • Maintains accurate records ensuring medical confidentiality is maintained within a non-medical context.

Incident Management

  • Provide medical expertise as required into an incident management team, joining the team as necessary.
  • Identify and escalate safeguarding or security concerns in line with VSO policy and process.

Medical Input to Programme Design and Operations

  • Give guidance on outbreaks and other health hazards as they occur in VSO’s locations.
  • Maintain briefing and guidance notes for use across VSO
  • Undertake medical risk assessment of VSO programmes and locations using desk research, coordination with project and security teams, Emergency Assistance Provider and other professional sources.
  • Deliver approved content online in health briefings to predeparture volunteers andmemployees as required.
  • As a key member within VSO’s Medical Team, contribute to medical policy, practice and guideline development and review.

Collaboration responsibilities (key teams/roles this role will be working with)

  • Collaborate with Medical Logistics Coordinator, other Global Health Advisers, Medical Advisers and the International Medical Lead and with the security and safeguarding team to help VSO fulfil its duty of care responsibilities.
  • Collaborate with the insurance customer service team to ensure smooth and timely medical authorization and payment arrangements.
  • Collaborate with project teams in times of emergency to ensuresmooth medical transfer or repatriation on medical grounds.
  • Collaborate with VSO duty of care focal points in developing the project planning tool and management of a medical outbreak/emergency
  • Collaborate with the project managers by providing technical support in the completion of the medical risk assessments.
  • Collaborate with the Global Implementation team to track and ensure medical compliance.

Education

  • Post graduate training in tropical medicine and/or infectious diseases.
  • Current or previous registration with UK Nursing and Midwifery Council.

More Details on Experience

  • Currently Registered nurse with more than five (5) years post qualification experience and a breadth of nursing practice.
  • Experience of work in travel health medicine and/or public health.
  • Experience of delivering interactive training, ideally for a non-medical audience
  • Experience of nursing in high, middle and lower-income countries.
  • Experience of providing remote mental health support

  • Independent practitioner who is self-motivated to meet deadlines with evidence of problem solving and critical thinking
  • Recognises complex issues beyond individual scope of practice and escalates to Medical Adviser or manager in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates ability to manage a heavy, varied and rapidly changing workload, including finding a balance between urgent tasks and implementing longer term
    agreed action.
  • Strong administrative skills and information technology literate (Microsoft packages, medical databases, MS Teams).
  • For this working from home role, it is vital to have reliable and strong internet connection.
  • In addition to English. ability to communicate in another language spoken in VSO countries.
