Location: Naitiri, Western Kenya (Next to Naitiri Sugar Company)

Net Salary: Kshs.30,000 starting, may increase each year subject to
performance.

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Managing Director, the Farm Manager will provide leadership and supervise staff, monitor crops, fish and bees as well as handle various administrative tasks. Prepare budgets, purchase supplies, maintain relationships with vendors and clients, and ensure maximum profitability and Managing Director can question him for under performance.

Description

Key Responsibilities Of The Farm Manager

  • Managing all on-farm activities including planning of all seeding,
    nursery, growing and harvesting, sorting, packaging, pruning, pest
    control, record keeping.
  • Assign duties to staff, such as cultivation, irrigation, harvesting,
    pruning, packaging, grading, and equipment maintenance.
  • Develop,implement and manage an annual plan for the whole farm (gardens with coffee, sugarcane, avocado, fish, bees and other on-farm growing spaces) including production, marketing, staffing, and financial plans, with the support of the Managing Director.
  • Lead and supervise all workers on aspects of crop production, including soil management and field preparation, greenhouse seeding and seedling management, transplanting, direct seeding, weeding, irrigation, harvesting and post-harvest handling of produce
  • Lead the distribution and marketing of the produce
  • Improve upon and implement fertility, weed, pest and disease management 
  • Ensure cleanliness is maintained at the highest level
  • Create and manage an annual farm budget, track and adjust income and expense 
  • Hire,train and supervise other market garden staff, interns, work share members, and volunteers in all relevant aspects of crop production and 
  • Facilitate farm team meetings, and oversee the seasonal work plan as well as weekly and daily“to do” 
  • Developand implement performance assessment and review systems for the market garden 
  • Overseemaintenance of farm implements, infrastructure, tools, and supplies, and budget for repairs, replacements, and 
  • Collect data and write monthly reports on production
  • Efficient utilization of farm labor to avoid high wage bills, and
    cutting down on unnecessary farm costs
  • Stock-taking of farm Inputs and know when re-order levels are due.
  • Implement a farm records management system and timely updates
    to management on progress status.
  • Embrace innovative ways to farming, advising on best practices.
  • Post-harvest processing including storage and packaging in
    preparation for sale.
  • Implement farm safety procedures at all times
  • Other duties assigned

Education
Diploma Certificate

Certificate/Diploma in agricultural economics, agronomy,
agribusiness, and another related field.

More Details on Experience

Must have at least five (5) years experience in a commercial farm
environment, managing farm assets and farm labour. Two (2) years as a supervisor.

Must be conversant with open field farming technology.

Must have a valid driving license

Requirements:

1. 2 References- one from past employer.
2. Certificate of good conduct no more than 3 months old might be required.

Note:

  • Initial probation period of 3 months.
