The U.S. Mission in Nairobi is seeking eligible and qualified applicants for the position of Library Clerk The position will be available immediately. Closing date for this position is March 29th 2019.

Minimum Requirements


EXPERIENCE:  Two years of office or library related work is required.



 Knowledge of records management and file organization required. Good working knowledge of LOC-Nairobi Office Procedures Manual; RDA Toolkit; OFORS documentation; verbal instructions from the Head of Serials Section.

Education Requirements:



Level IV in English (fluent) reading Reading/Speaking/writing is required (This may be tested ).


Level III in Kiswahili (good working knowledge) Reading/Speaking/writing is required.


Level I (rudimentary) in French, Portuguese, or any other language is spoken in Sub-Saharan Africa is required.     



Good computer skills, to include Microsoft Office (standard); keyboarding skills (basic); ability to organize work, place priorities and manage time effectively (standard).

Job Specification

Basic Function of the Position:


Reporting to the Head of Serials Section, incumbent collates and prepares newspapers, official gazettes, and other materials for microfilming at the Library of Congress (LOC)-New Delhi Office; generates shipping lists from OFORS (LOC-Nairobi’s financial and acquisitions system) and schedules shipments to LOC-New Delhi, and using the DHL online shipping platform, tracks the shipment online using the Waybill number. The incumbent coordinates with the Embassy mailroom and courier service providers in shipping newspapers to LOC-New Delhi and the Center for Research Libraries (CRL), in accordance with LOC policies and Indian customs regulations.  Additionally, the incumbent works closely with the Serials Technician in processing issues of newspapers, serials, and official gazettes received in incoming shipments, to include initiating the payment process by creating and updating Purchase Orders (POs).  Verifies regular and new title issues and enters bibliographic information into OFORS.
