Organisational background:

Action Contre la Faim (Action Against Hunger) has been conducting humanitarian programs in Somalia since May 1992. Currently, Action Against Hunger is conducting its humanitarian activities in Somalia focused on treating and preventing malnutrition, increasing access to clean water and appropriate sanitation, strengthening the food-security, livelihoods and thus boosting the resilience of communities in Somalia as well as emergency response via program bases in Somalia.

Scope of Responsibility:

  • The Laboratory  Technician is responsible of activities performed inside the Laboratory and following up blood transfusions (if applicable) in the ward.

The Lab Technician reports hierarchically to the OTP Nurse. The Lab Technicians will be based in Somalia-one in Yeed.

Objective 1:     General Knowledge of Action Against Hunger and Safety at work

  • Co-operation with the colleagues of own and other departments
  • Is aware of activities of other departments and respect specific rules and procedures
  • Comply with the health and safety rules / instructions of the supervisor for wearing protective gears (if/when applicable) related to the job
  • Ensure all staff supervised by him/her comply with the health and safety rules / instructions of the supervisor for wearing protective gears (if/where) related to the job
  • Respect medical ethics at all times

Objective 2:     Laboratory activities

  • According to the medical prescription, perform laboratory exams (serology, hematology, biochemistry, bacteriology, parasitology, according to context), with the appropriate techniques, and according to standard protocols approved by Action Against Hunger
  • Give information to the relevant persons (ward/doctors/nurse according to context) about the results, respecting confidentiality
  • Always ensure that sample results are correctly registered and  reported.
  • Make sure quality controls are done regularly: internal and external
  • Carry out sample collection when needed

Objective 3:     Hygiene and security

  • Know and apply hygiene protocols (for individual and collective protection). Carry out cleaning and tidying up of the laboratory.
  • Ensure briefing of cleaning persons on biohazards
  • Ensure proper sample disposal according to highest Action Against Hunger safety standards

Objective 4:     Material management

  • Manage and organise efficiently the laboratory equipment and supply: orders, stock follow-up, storage conditions, inventory, follow-up of expired reagents and kits and their proper disposal
  • He/she is responsible of equipment maintenance including automatic instrument calibration

Objective 5:     Team managements:

  • Participate in the development of the plan of action
  • Supervise, motivate and train the staff under his/her supervision (labtech assistant)
  • Reports all important information linked to the function activities that should be communicated to the hierarchy

Objeetive 6:       Reporting to the supervisor:

  • Make reports on a regular basis (daily / weekly / monthly)
  • Report problems encountered to the supervisor
  • Report immediately to the technical referent any problem arising in the service, especially the loss/ robbery/damage of medical equipment or medicines
